Driving Sustainable Development Through Local Enterprise

Focus: Supporting Economic Projects & Community Development

Brussels, like many European cities, has pockets of high unemployment, particularly among younger generations and immigrant communities. Empty lots and neglected spaces dotted some neighborhoods, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of the city. A visionary local youth collective saw these spaces not as blight, but as potential for growth: urban farms that could provide fresh, local produce and create job training opportunities.

Sauber Association was drawn to their ambition. Our economic project support extended to this “Urban Farm Project,” providing seed funding for initial infrastructure – raised garden beds, an irrigation system, and a small greenhouse – and crucial mentorship to help them establish a viable business model. This wasn’t just about growing vegetables; it was about cultivating skills, fostering entrepreneurship, and building community resilience.

Sauber's belief in us changed everything," says Malik, one of the young project leaders. "Their investment allowed us to turn a neglected space into a productive farm. But it's more than that; they helped us structure our sales, understand market demand, and even create partnerships with local restaurants. We're not just growing food; we're growing careers.

The Urban Farm Project now supplies fresh produce to several local restaurants and community markets, creating 8 new part-time jobs and providing vocational training for over 20 young people annually in sustainable agriculture and urban entrepreneurship. It stands as a vibrant testament to how Sauber’s strategic economic support can transform overlooked urban spaces into engines of opportunity and community vitality.
